Trembling thoughts | Katharien de Villiers

Thu, June 14, 2018

SMITH is pleased to announce Trembling Thought, a one-night art event in the Artist’s studio showcasing an expansive new collection of works from visual artist Katharien de Villiers.

Although this will be a one-night event, De Villiers will be available for studio visits in the month after to show collectors around and talk about her process.

De Villiers’ new body of work is interested in uncertainty and virtual reality. This body of work deals with the instability of memory. De Villiers calls the show, “A recorded library of warped memory”. The artist draws from memory, and revels in the uncertainty of her recollections. De Villiers finds potential and multiplicity in uncertainty.

De Villiers attempts to materialise the desires and power structures at play when we reproduce memory. De Villiers says, “The product is a woven dreamscape of photographs, colour and texture, creating arrangements of understanding and reality that can only be my own.” Trembling Thought offers multiple entry points and possible conclusions.

The show includes a new collection of paintings and some moving installations seen earlier this year at the Investec Cape Town Art Fair.

Trembling Thought opens at 17h30 on Thursday 14 June at 15 Wandel Street, for one night only. For press enquiries and to set up an interview with the artist, please contact Jana Terblanche at
